If you have a 3 min connection to a 16 minute train, is that 2 or 3 tickets? And do we need to count waiting times to connect or just train duration?

Waiting times are not counted. Only scheduled times. Connections count as long as you don't tap out, rendering a ticket used fully.

In case this is still on your agenda, you'd need to both go to it and claim a bus route with a stop that's within a 10 minute walk of the embassy

We can see on the TfL site that there is indeed a bus within a 10 minute walk from the Embassy, which means that would have to be claimed in order to claim the Embassy too. However, if it can be proved that there is no service until after the game ends, we may be able to reconsider using Acton Town station as the next best option.

What if we wanted to get on a train route we already own, then start claiming a section we don't without disembarking, can we do that?

So say we own section A to C, can we get on at A, travel to C for free, then use a ticket to continue on to claim C to D etc.?

Yes you can, as long as you are on the same line of train between A - C

so if you want to travel to Westminster along the District line, you'd only be ticketed from Earls Court since that's already part of your network
