Avatar
I did the last one
22:45
It's very fun
Avatar

I did the last one too, it was a blast
Avatar
hi all! i was invited here by joe post the last game and it seems exciting so cant wait to get started
Avatar
Is anyone on our team from London?
20:59
Or knows the zone 1 area well?
Avatar
thisemotrash 27/01/2025 20:59
im from Essex so i know London pretty well
Avatar
I'm not, I'm from the North so it'll be good to have some somewhat local knowledge 😄
Avatar
thisemotrash 27/01/2025 21:00
the times ive been into London is well into the hundreds by now
Avatar
I just found a list of central London journeys that could be quicker to walk than taking the tube. I'm considering making a map for our team with those connections marked on
Avatar
thisemotrash 27/01/2025 21:02
Piccadilly Circus - Leicester Square - Covent Garden is absolutely worth doing since theyre like a minute walk from each other
21:02
same with Bayswater and Queensway, one street over but on the tube youd have to change lines
21:03
i'm open to suggestions but i think our starting play should be immediately cross the bridge to Embankment and try that, then go a couple stops up the Bakerloo to Piccadilly
Avatar
For journeys on the same line there is this walking times map that I found:
Avatar
thisemotrash 27/01/2025 21:05
thats not fully accurate
21:06
for example going from Bayswater to Queensway, that map looks like it'd take ages but when you look at the map its literally this
21:06
Avatar
Yeah that's because you have to change lines. This map only shows walking distances along the same line
Avatar
thisemotrash 27/01/2025 21:07
i guess thats where my "local" knowledge can come in for certain areas
21:07
21:07
this list claims it should take 5 minutes but that map you posted yeah literally looks like 2 minutes
Avatar
thisemotrash 27/01/2025 21:09
also Regent's Park - Great Portland Street - Warren Street - Euston Square are all on the same 5 minute stretch of road
21:10
21:12
i think we should avoid the Kensington stations, they look close on a map but getting out at South Kensington can be an absolute pain, especially on a saturday when lots of people will be going to the museums
21:20
shmee is my friend, he's from Cambridge and I don't think he has much local knowledge for London

Hmm, is there a time of day where they're less busy? Claiming them earlier in the day when they might be less busy could be a strategy to make them difficult to battle later in the game
21:23
I'm not a local so I don't know, but I've heard from others too that corner of zone 1 gets really bad with congestion especially in rush hour
21:25
Last game 2 teams got trapped for ages along the Piccadilly line at Knightsbridge and then Hyde Park Corner
21:25
When they closed the stations due to overcrowding
21:27
This time I think we should avoid busy areas at busy times, but also I'm wondering if we can use it as a strategy to lure other teams there and potentially slow them down in overcrowded areas
Avatar
thisemotrash 27/01/2025 21:27
not really a rush hour on saturdays, its just busy all day no matter what
Avatar
hmm okay, maybe we go the opposite direction then to make that area of the map look emptier and tempt other teams there (edited)
Avatar
thisemotrash 27/01/2025 21:28
maybe, but we dont want other teams getting the "easy" stations first
21:28
if we can beat them there with a plan of action they'll be left with Kensington
21:30
i mean there is a case for gunning straight for Waterloo and getting the Waterloo & City line to Bank to get the cluster of stations ther e
Avatar
I'm not really sure what the easy stations would be
21:30
Ideally we want to find a cluster which is fast to travel between
21:30
yeah
Avatar
Avatar

The waterloo and city line does not run on weekends. I found this out last time 😂
Avatar
thisemotrash 27/01/2025 21:31
thats why i think we go straight over to Piccadilly and get the 3 stations there, then go up to Warren Street and get the 4 stations there
21:32
i'm also looking at the challenge list and making plans in my head for some of them
Avatar
Yeah. It's not as complicated as it was last time with the location-specific challenges
21:32
It's mostly just looking at a map and finding clusters
Avatar
thisemotrash 27/01/2025 21:33
yeah and some of the challenges look difficult but are going to be easier than you think
21:34
like one that looks immediately difficult is "find a product with the royal warrant" a lot of people are gonna struggle, but I'm from Essex and we have 2 food items known the world over with the royal warrant that you can find anywhere so ive got that locked in
👍 1
Avatar
The other thing we need to consider is that other teams will be strategizing too and some of them may come up with the same strategy as us
21:36
If they end up slightly ahead of us and start claiming everything in sequence before we can, we need a contingency plan
Avatar
thisemotrash 27/01/2025 21:38
I think south of the river is gonna be a ghost town, all the action will be north of the river so if everything fails we go to like Battersea Power Station or something
Avatar
I suggest that in the event that we get beaten to one of the Piccadilly line stations while we're trying to claim it, we abandon the Piccadilly line and go directly to the Warren Street cluster
21:39
That way we get a lead over the other team at least for one cluster
Avatar
thisemotrash 27/01/2025 21:39
Yeah that would be good
21:39
Because that cluster is right by Euston and Kings Cross so you can basically get anywhere after
Avatar
Yep. We are allowed to take non-underground trains from there even, it's just they don't count for battle adjacency
Avatar
thisemotrash 27/01/2025 21:41
Yeah, from Kings Cross you can get the Thameslink down to Blackfriars and get some of the inner city stations
Avatar
In the last game I felt like our team was making the most progress when we were just travelling down a tube line claiming the stations one by one
Avatar
thisemotrash 27/01/2025 21:43
I guess we have to see what the other teams do, having 3 other teams to contend with will mean we might have to battle a lot
21:43
Obviously this is my first time doing one of these so I’m only going in with logistics brain and not player brain
Avatar
I think middle-game strategy after the clusters is to pick a line as our own and claim all of them
21:44
By "line" I mean from where we are to one end of zone 1, not like from one end of zone 1 to the other haha
Avatar
thisemotrash 27/01/2025 21:45
Not Bakerloo or Piccadilly, those are the slowest lines
21:45
I’d suggest Northern or Central
Avatar
I'm thinking from Euston it might be smart to go clockwise around the circle line, as those trains are not deep underground
Avatar
thisemotrash 27/01/2025 21:46
true, we would have a phone and wifi signal on the circle so we can see what other teams are up to
Avatar
But you're right we'll also need to adapt our plan to what the other teams are doing
21:48
One other bit of strategy I can think of to prepare us for the late game which I think will be full of battles due to the number of teams. We should look at what the battles are and think about where in London it would be easiest to get the biggest advantage
21:49
Ideally we want to claim stations in the middle-game which give the challengers the biggest disadvantage and end up in a part of London where we have the biggest advantage
Avatar
thisemotrash 27/01/2025 21:50
but also the early-game territorial claim needs to happen to basically show the other teams we have our territory, keep out
Avatar
Last game, we battled another team and had to get as high from the ground as we could in 10 minutes. But we were in central London and couldn't move around the crowds very fast. So we ended up not even getting into a multi-storey building at all
Avatar
thisemotrash 27/01/2025 21:52
i think we'll have to review what the battle challenges are in advance
Avatar
So I think central London clusters are pretty good since the challengers have a disadvantage due to the overcrowding pretty much no matter what the challenge
Avatar
Btw if anyone else wants to comment on our strategy, it's not set in stone or anything 🙂 (edited)
Avatar
okay here's my disgusting low-effort job at updating the walking times map
04:13
not very useful tbh until I add on the other by-foot connections
04:19
(I'm mostly doing this for fun btw we don't have to use it at all)
Avatar
with walking shortcuts added:
16:36
idk how useful it will be but I made it anyway (and then nerdsniped a graphics designer friend who made the lines a bit nicer)
Avatar
thisemotrash 31/01/2025 17:24
those times must be platform to platform, a lot of those are easily half the time it says even with us constantly checking Discord
👍 1
Avatar
thisemotrash 31/01/2025 18:55
i'm going to bring some pens and sheets of paper, i know someone else will be bringing enough paper for everyone but i wanna make sure we have everything ready if we get a drawing challenge
Avatar
thisemotrash 31/01/2025 19:11
also if we do a battle, i sincerely hope we get the one involving naming as many countries in the world as possible, because i can name all 197 by heart

Yeah agreed, I was looking at them and thinking the same. At least it's easily visible where a shortcut exists though. I don't anticipate this being needed except in case of dramatic changes of plans though
Avatar
LouisOnAir 01/02/2025 00:40
I'm bringing a drawing pad tomorrow so we should be good. From my experience, it's not worth going out of our way to initiate a battle because it's time spent travelling to and maybe claiming a station, rather than most likely claiming a station if there's one nearby
Avatar
Yep, I think since there's 4 teams though there will come a point where there are few free stations left so there will be a lot of battles in the late game

I’ve got multiple portable chargers and cables for all phone types, papers pens and dice so we should be completely fine for whatever comes up
Avatar
Nice haha, me and Sammy also have portable chargers

I lost my pen tho 🙁
